Severe storms struck Monroe and surrounding counties Friday evening, causing damage to homes, businesses and public areas.
The Bloomingtonian documented the damage — ripped roofs, demolished buildings and downed trees and powerlines.
810 Monroe County customers are without power as of 2:30 p.m., according to Duke Energy, with an estimated time of restoration at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
Mayor Kerry Thomson thanked the Bloomington community, including first responders, for stepping in to help and encouraged the public to “take care of one another” in an online public statement Saturday morning.
“Right now, the best way to support response efforts is to share accurate information and avoid bringing unsolicited donations,” the statement read.
Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers Rd., is open as an emergency shelter offering food, showers, device charging, nurses and emotional support. Enter through Door 4.
The city of Bloomington asked the public not to come to the shelter if they are not in need. Visitors may check on loved ones, but the shelter is prioritizing the people directly affected.
Once emergency responders have addressed immediate needs, the city will share updates on how to help, including any clean-up opportunities.
